To "Error" is Human

Questionable calls benefiting White Sox

At some point, the baseball community is going to have to admit that their Umpires are making some minor, and major mistakes! Last week I got really angry over a few calls against the Cardinals in the NLCS with the Astros. These calls lead to some people actually being thrown out of the game. Well these same types of calls seem to be happening in every game during the playoff season. What would have happened if the homeplate umpire would have called Dye's basesloaded walk a fowl like every camera showed it was?! Would there have been a grand slam that tied the game right after that? Who knows, but do not tell me that a botched call cannot change the entire game significantly. It are the teams that really blow the lead, and score, but sometimes all it can take is a little nudge from the ump to push the game in someone else's favor.

Now I have fought with my girlfriend who is a baseball purist about 3 or 4 times about instant replay in baseball and I believe that I have lost the argument. However, with more advanced replay technology being developed every year, I believe that replay is baseball will come soon. Like it or not!

Ohh and when the Vice President of Baseball in charge of Umpires says, "If theres any good to come from this that weve experienced thus far in the postseason, its in the category of lessons learned." I do not believe that the postseason is ANY time for an Umpire to learn any type of lesson.

Or when the Umps crew cheif says, "They are getting blistered for things that happen every day" I say stop complaining, if you need any help, I am sure there is a camera somewhere in the stadium.

Jon, you have that backwards. The umps aren't the ones complaining, you fans are! Do you honestly think the cards would have made it if those two calls went the cards way instead? Please, the astros were the better team in that series and it was OBVIOUS by how shitty the cards played. Yes, bad calls happen and they suck, but you cannot tell me that because of them, the sox and the 'stros don't belong in the world series. In the game of baseball, if you make it to the world series, its because you DESERVE to be there, not because a few calls went your way.

It is not just the fans who are complaining, but the Umps as well. And I do not blame the Umps for the Cardinals blowing it, I blame the Cards. However, I was just pointing out that there is a lot of blown calls lately in the postseason. And if you do not think that walking Dye, which lead to a grand slam did not change that game a little, you might be blinded by your baseball glory!

Blinded by baseball glory?! Jon, maybe if you'd watch more than 2 postseasons (you know since you became a cards fan only recently and all) you'd realize that bad calls are not exclusive to this postseason. Bad calls are remembered generations after they happen because they make the game more exciting. Instant replay would slow an already long game and make the game boring. Bad calls, manager-ump fights, the clearing of the benches, are just a few things that keep the excitement and passion alive in fans, as you are displaying. But changing the game like that is taking it too far.

Well Well, I am sorry oh great baseball elitists. I am sorry that I just started liking baseball since I moved to this city. I quake in your presence, please forgive me. If it was not for both of you, there would be no baseball! I only wish I could live up to your standards and be a great fan for my entire life.

The problem here Brian is that I agree with both of you. I do not think that there should be instant replay, I just think it sucks that major plays can be blown like that. Once again Lisa would argue what I just said is the core of baseball. Also I am not a fairweather fan, I just was enlighted by baseball in the STL and not Chi-Town where not a damn person care unless their team is winning. I hope the Cubs go to the world series and lose based on one call, because I will be there and say...Well thats baseball!

Brian will say that he does not care about any team at the moment, which does not surprise me since he never takes a side, or will argue both sides!

So here's to a flawed sport! Which Lisa has loved her entire life, Brian loves when he wants to argue, and I love just to wear the hat!

;)

Ok, i'm done arguing about what we started arguing about, b/c its pretty clear that brian and i rule. But jon, please stop clumping all chicago fans together as these awful asshole people who only like their team when they're winning. I don't know how many times i have to tell you, but Cubs fans ALWAYS care about the cubs. If we only cared when they're winning, then the regular season tickets would be a LOT easier to get (oh and they wouldn't HAVE any fans b/c they NEVER win). But alas, wrigley sells out a LOT faster (and more seasons on average ala pre mark mcguire) than Busch. Baseball analysists aren't lying when they constantly peg cub fans as, "the most loyal fans in baseball."
