How NOT to Solve a Problem

Bush seeks 5,000 Guard troops on border

There is a reason why millions of people cross the border illegally each year. Because they can! The policies of the government prevent them from easily becoming citizens, and also allow them from actually getting kicked out once they are here illegally. So instead of solving the internal problems which in turn is causing all of these "immigration" issues we are now sending the national guard to do the border patrol's job. Now it is my understanding that they will not actually be arresting illegals, or any law enforcement, but the 5,000 troops will be used for communications and surveillance.
“We’ve got National Guard members on their second, third and
fourth tours in Iraq,” Hagel said. “We have stretched our military as thin as we
have ever seen it in modern times. And what in the world are we talking about
here, sending a National Guard that we may not have any capacity to send up to
or down to protect borders? That’s not their role.”
Nope, it is not their role at all... That is the role of the border patrol, which is under-funded and under-staffed. I am not impressed with this option at all, and it depresses me that we must use the national guard for everything that we do not really want to fix, or cannot fix at all.

It doesn't seem like putting an overburdened national guard on the border will solve the problem, in the short or long term. The Hagel-Martinez bill in the Senate provides for doubling the border patrol, which seems like a much better solution. The bill also provides for greater technological survaliance of the border as well.

I just thought that now would be a good time to let this article out: http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/gate/archive/2006/05/12/notes051206.DTL&nl=fix

Jon, I didn't read the article yet, but I read what you had to say and I have to say I agree--when the problem lies internally, trying to solve it externally is to no avail.

So what is the answer to the illegal immigration issue?

Well Rusty it looks to me that there needs to be a few changes in the laws and other policies in this area.

Bush is primarily concerned with terrorists being able to slip in through Mexico. He wants to track who enters the US. This is why he's willing to open up more temporary work visas. This whole thing looks like a big deal, but its really just a band aid.
