May I have your Attention?

(Some) Attention Must Be Paid!

Are we too connected to our lives, that we cannot actually connect with the people who are with us at the moment? How many times have you sat in a meeting and a cell phone went off, or are talking with someone and they have to write a text message while you are talking with them? I know that I have been guilty of this many times, but as I read this article I realize how insulting it actually is to ignore the person who is talking with you. Just about every co-worker in my office has done this, and I have done this to them, but really what message are we sending to each other? Is there something more important to do than to talk to each other? Has life become too impersonal?

I do not see this getting any better in the workplace or anywhere else. As technology improves how connected we are, the less personal life will become. I am sure we will all adapt at being impersonal and will look back at how we could never live without our communication implants in our brains that allows us to communicate with our friends around the world as if they are in front of us. What if Richard could just think his blog and it would automatically post in all of our brains?

No matter how connected we are to each other I do not think we should ever lose site of old fashioned person to person contact. Unless you hate people and are a hermit. Which many of you are.

If I could think my blog into your brains, my friends, you'd all have to quit your jobs. You wouldn't have time for them. Your life would be a nonstop stream of chatter about politics, music, American Idol, and shows on HBO. Just like mine.

What happens if you are JUST a hermit, or you JUST hate people, but not both?

Nobody wants to talk to those people anyway.
