Free Love

Big Love

Big Hate

Polygamy is really fun to think about. It is obvious that the human mind allows someone to "Love" more than one person at a time, so why choose when you can just be with multiple partners? I am so hung up at times about the emotion of Love. It seems it is different for everyone, but always causes the same problems. Love is so relative, yet everyone wants to define it so that their love is "normal".

The HBO show Big Love shows us the drama of a man who has 3 wives in Utah. Each wife has their own house, kids, but they all live right next to each other. Each wife has her day with the husband, and those are the rules. Each wife shares everything with the collective family. The drama unfolds as the wives are jealous of each other, and how the husband manages his three families. The show plays off a lot of the stereotypical girl competition and jealousy, and it would be really funny to see a show that had a wife with three husbands. How would the men deal with all that competition with each other? This show is really fun to watch, but makes me think a lot.

Society has defined love and how love should be for so long, that it has really boxed humans into a corner. Whether it is for religion, or property marriage is defined with love as only 1 man and 1 woman. But what if we lived in a world without any constraints on love? Would polygamy be the main choice for marriage, or would it still just be one man/woman? It is clear that humans who are deprived of loving who they want have some issues down the road. Would it just be better for society to take away all constraints it has placed on love? Would society come to an end. I do not think so, but I am sure it would get better.

I really enjoy this show, too. But it does provoke thought, doesn't it?

I don't think you'll see a show where one woman marries three men, in part because there would be no real-life role model for that situation. It's just not common. And there are solid reasons for this. On average, it's more likely that you'll find a man with the sexual appetite to satisfy three wives than a woman who can satisfy three husbands (though there are, of course, exceptions). And matters of parenting are much simpler with multiple women than multiple men. To be blunt, a woman can only carry one man's child at a time. Can you imagine the hostility that might cause among the three men? Especially when the two non-fathers are denied sex for months on end before and after their shared wife delivers a baby that isn't theirs.

As for polygamy in general, I doubt you'd see much of it even if we dropped all our laws against it. Many men may wish they could sleep with multiple women, but I think they're savvy enough to realize all the potential problems, financial, emotional, and otherwise, from marrying more than one.

Besides, if we go back to the days of rich men taking on multiple wives (which continued on with kept mistresses into present times), we'd better get ready to raise an army and attack someone. There could be a lot of men without anyone to marry, and too many of them is trouble waiting to happen.

Hmm...I may have found the answer to our China problem!

The reason why polygamy wouldn't get bug is because of the saying, what do you get with three wives? Three mother-in-laws

If the wives had sex with each other as well as their husband I don't think there would be near as much trouble/jealous as you make it sound like the group in Utah is having.
