What is the Point?

Bishops bend Lent rules for St. Pat's Day

Is not eating meat on Fridays for God, or the Catholic Church? My mother, has never liked the rule since I have been born. She claims it is all about money and the fishing industry, and nothing about sacrifice. So growing up, I never was really held to not eating meat on Fridays during lent. This year I told myself that I do not care if it about the fishing industry or not, I am not going to eat meat on Fridays. However, today is St. Patrick's Day and it is also a Friday during lent.
"It is being done in honor of St. Patrick, O'Leary said.
It's not as though I'm having something I would normally have. It's a special
thing."

It pisses me off that bishops can just bend the rules around lent like they are! If lent is about sacrifice for God, then I do not believe these Bishops would allow this. This proves my mothers point for me. Not eating meat is about money. A lot of money is brought in to parishes from fish frys during this season. This is more about money and tradition, than it is about God.

This also sends a poor message to peopldevout devoute Catholics, that the rules do not matter and can be bent when the Church feels like it. Well maybe the Church can bend its rules on stem cell research, and priests getting married. If the Catholic Church's leaders canntheirke thier own rules seriously how can they expect Catholic's to obey them?

I read yesterday that the Catholic church doesn't call it a rule anymore (unlike eating an hour before you take communion), it's just a tradition. So the Church chooses between traditions, and they do this everytime St. Pat's falls on a friday. Just like the Catholic church doesn't require you to give something up, in fact last time a priest talked about it in his homily it was about using this time to get closer to God, either through sacrafice (giving something up), more prayer, dedicating youself to something; just find something. Heck, Ash Wednesday isn't even a Holy Day of Obligation and more people go to church that day then go on the Ascension.

And yes I updated my Blog today. And did they shorten the word verification permanently?

Every Lent I say that I'm going to be good and not eat meat on Fridays. Then, inevitably, I screw up and eat something meaty--usually the first Friday or so. So then I say, "Oh, I'll just not eat meat tomorrow." And that never works. So that is why I have decided that it's just not a "rule" that is meant to be followed anymore. . . either that or I just have no willpower when it comes to chicken. :)

It's lauren and I justify eating "meat" by saying Chicken and turkey don't count. They're poultry.
