Illegal, not Criminal

Immigration rallies kick off in Atlanta, other cities

Can you even imagine what it would be like if all of of sudden 11 million people just become criminals? Illegal immigration is a double edged sword. We cannot function without them, they need us, and it is costing the US taxpayer a shit load of money. When you throw the words, national security in the mix, then it become a real problem. Do we need better border security? Yes, a lot better! Can we do this without hurting all the illegal immigrants in our nation? Yes!

I am not a fan of having the U.S. taxpayer paying for services of people that do not pay taxes at all. But then again, that is what the US tax payer is doing for the people of Iraq, and Afghanistan. Those people are not even working in our country and we are paying for the building of theirs. So when the American people bitch about that, I will support them. Making Illegal immigrants criminals is a dumb idea, which i believe is dead in the water in Washington.

If lawmakers want to make this issue about national security, then make it about security, not the status of immigrants in the US. The U.S. is closing its doors, in a time where it should be open more than ever. Illegal immigrants are coming to the US for a reason. That reason is hope and a better life for their families. I know that they are immigrating here illegally, but if you could place yourself in their life, you might have to come here illegally as well. Fixing poverty, and hopelessness, is something the US taxpayer should invest in!

Jon, many illegals do pay taxes. In fact its extremely hard for illegals to find a job that doesn't force them to pay taxes.

Jon while I agree with your agrument on the merits, the title isn't right. Illegal immigrants are already criminals. The proposed law I believe, wants to make them guilty of a felony. Currently they are guilty of a misdemeanor.

(a) Willful failure to register. [Any alien who]. . . fails or refuses to file application for the registration of such alien shall be guilty of a misdemeanor and shall, upon conviction thereof, be fined not to exceed $ 1,000 or be imprisoned not more than six months, or both.

My play on words was not as good as I hoped.

I am sure the illegal alien has 1000 bucks on him or her. And the prison system can handle the burden of all those people.

I'm just very proud to see peaceful protests (with SUCH a huge turnout) and the protesters waving American flags. Should it be a felony? No, for the love of God, no. I love how the Bush admin. is just using this as a distraction from all the other f-ups that man's been doing recently. Sad W....sad...

Without any facts to back it up I bet they rarely fine or imprison. Notice the statute says "not to exceed" $1,000, it could be $5 and they could imprison up to 6 months. Most of the time I bet they just deport. But I have zero facts to back that up, just speculation. Because you're right, they aren't going to have 1000 bucks, so why bother fining them you aren't going to get it.

Yeah I do not think you need to fact check on that one. We are too busy putting black people in prison for drugs to waste time with illegal immigrants.
